Private park?
The ongoing Washington Square Park redesign is still receiving a lot of heat for desecrating and privatizing the park. Critics have been saying that the renovations are not necessary and will restrict space for protests and change the demographics of the users of the park. The parks commission is redesigning the park to move the fountain so its aligned with the arch, level the main plaza, and move the dog-run to increase green space. What stinks about the project is that it is seen as a stepping stone for privatization of public property. The total cost for the renovation is $16 million, the city is paying just under half of it, while the other $9 million is coming from local donors such as the Tisch family and New York University. Did I mention the finished property will have four foot iron fences? [more]
